Leveraging Germany-based corporates to help bridge the digital divide

In an ongoing effort to narrow the digital gap and foster equal opportunities in education, Close the Gap has partnered up with TechTogether. Headquartered in Berlin, this non-profit organization strives to collect ICT donations from German companies as well as international firms situated in Germany. Through its collaboration with Close the Gap, the donated ICT devices are dispatched to educational, social and entrepreneurial projects in the global South. Especially in remote areas where access to computers is limited, this partnership endeavors to provide essential resources for learners to thrive academically. A first pilot project supported by CoachHub has led to the supply of over 30 computer devices to Pwani Teknowgalz and the Calvary Zion Children's Home, both in Kenya. Close the Gap and TechTogether are committed to jointly empowering communities through digital inclusion.

TechTogether

TechTogether, is a dynamic non-profit organization dedicated to harnessing the power of technology for social good. TechTogether serves as a vital conduit between the German corporate sector and Close the Gap, aiming at fostering digital inclusion. Through strategic partnerships and innovative approaches, TechTogether actively engages with German companies and branches of international corporations, advocating for the donation of ICT hardware to support the mission of both partner organizations. Furthermore, the organization engages in fundraising efforts to lower or waive the cost of refurbishment for the receiving partner in the global South.

CoachHub

The collaboration between Close the Gap and TechTogether was formalized through a pilot project, made possible by CoachHub. Their hardware donation and financial contribution for the refurbishment allowed us to supply two non-profit organizations with very limited resources in Kenya with vital ICT equipment.

CoachHub is a global tech company based in Berlin, Germany, that specializes in digital coaching solutions for businesses. Leveraging technology, they provide a platform that connects employees with certified coaches to support their professional and personal development. CoachHub has demonstrated its commitment to corporate social responsibility through its CoachHub4Good program, and has substantiated efforts in this domain by supporting Close the Gap and TechTogether’s partnership with a pioneering donation.

Pwani Teknowgalz

“Working with the TechTogether team has been an excellent experience. Their passion for our mission was evident through proactive engagement, including visits to our offices and regular updates on donation progress. We're confident that the donated laptops will significantly enhance our impactful work in Mombasa and Kenya.”

The first organization supported through the collaborative efforts of Close the Gap and TechTogether was Pwani Teknowgalz, a community-based organization located in Mombasa, Kenya. Dedicated to empowering young women with technology skills, Pwani Teknowgalz has already impacted over 6.000 individuals across Mombasa and Kenya, fostering the development of practical solutions on platforms such as Google and Github.

Prior to this donation, Pwani Teknowgalz could only accommodate 15 young women for training, with limited access to shared laptops and computers. However, with the additional support, they can now organize training of up to 30 women simultaneously, doubling their capacity and magnifying their impact on the community. The expansion of their infrastructure with 27 laptops signifies an immense leap forward for Pwani Teknowgalz in their mission to empower more young women to pursue careers with invaluable tech skills, igniting positive transformation within their community and beyond.

Calvary Zion Children's Home

The second receiving partner was Calvary Zion’s Children Home, established in 1998 in Mombasa, Kenya. It has been a sanctuary for abandoned and orphaned children ever since, under the compassionate care of women from the local community. These dedicated caregivers do not only provide shelter but also essential nurturing and protection to ensure the well-being of every child. While the children attend fee-paying schools, the home recognizes the importance of bridging the technological gap and fostering educational advancement. The recent donation of six desktops and monitors through TechTogether and Close the Gap’s partnership signifies a step forward in realizing their vision of setting up a computer lab within the home. This initiative aims to empower the children with essential digital skills, enabling them to thrive academically and not be left behind due to their circumstances.
