A Digital Classroom on Wheels: The Rebirth of the Digitruck with Pebbles Project

June 2, 2025
Description

Pebbles Project is a South African non-profit organization passionate about supporting children and their families in farming communities, especially in the winelands near Cape Town. Many of these children come from families that are working in vineyards, with limited access to quality education and digital tools.

Pebbles’ mission is built on five core pillars: education, health, nutrition, community and protection. The organization develops holistic programmes to support early childhood development, educational success, and social well-being — helping children grow up with better opportunities.

Creating a bridge between communities, technology and the future.

As part of the 'education' pillar, Pebbles uses the computers provided by Close the Gap in several impactful ways. Some are used by children to do online research for their school projects, giving them access to knowledge they would otherwise miss. Other devices are equipped with educational games for younger learners, helping them to develop skills in literacy, memory, problem-solving and mathematics. A number of computers are also installed with the CAMI educational software, allowing the children to have a personal learning profile and enabling the teachers to monitor their progress in languages and mathemathics.

Their digital efforts have now taken a new leap forward. The Digitruck, a mobile IT classroom in a converted shipping container, was initially launched in Hermanus for adult education. More than a decade later, it has been refurbished and relocated to support Pebbles’ younger learners, bringing digital learning directly to remote wine-farming communities.

"This truly issuch a big gift. With these children living on farms, they aren’t exposed to the same things as a child that lives in a town. This gives them the opportunity to feel connected and not so isolated.", shared Madelein Snyman, Project Manager at Pebbles.

This initiative continues to draw attention, with visits from Belgian diplomats and stakeholders who are impressed by its tangible impact. With figures like Desmond Tutu, a former patron of the organisation, Pebbles carries a strong legacy of hope, equality, and access to opportunity.

We're proud to see how this Belgian-built Digitruck continues to support the Pebbles Project, creating a bridge between communities, technology and the future.
