It is not only about new tools, it is about new opportunities.

A group of students gathered around laptops, eyes wide with curiosity and wonder. For many of them, it was their first hands-on encounter with 3D learning technology. An experience that would mark a turning point in their understanding of science, technology, and the world around them. This was the pilot of the 3DL model, a groundbreaking initiative developed in partnership with 3DL. Designed to enhance learning through immersive, three-dimensional education tools, the program was delivered using devices provided by Close the Gap. For these learners and their teachers, it wasn’t just about new tools. It was about new opportunities

My expectations today are to meet new friends, get to know new people, and also to learn about 3D… and learn more about software,” one student shared with a hopeful smile, summing up the excitement of the day. Our mission has always been clear: to change lives with digital devices by providing equitable access to technology and digital education. Through our Mombasa hub, Close the Gap has become a lifeline for schools across coastal Kenya, supplying refurbished devices, offering digital literacy programs, and creating inclusive spaces for experimentation and learning. The 3DL pilot is a continuation of that mission, demonstrating how digital transformation can become a practical and immediate reality even in schools with limited resources. “3D learning means three-dimensional learning,” said Mr. Newton a teacher from Kongowea Comprehensive School. “The skills are going to impact them. They are going to practice more in school, and they are going to understand more in their learning.”

Innovation. Inclusion. Impact.

Traditional learning methods, especially in the sciences, often fall short when abstract concepts can’t be visualized. With 3DL’sinteractive software, students were not only able to see plant structures they could manipulate them in real-time. Roots, stems, and leaves came to life on their screens in a fully interactive format. “Learners are able to interact with the software. They are able to view, to see the outer part and to have the different interface of the organs that are in plants,” explained one of the facilitators. “This 3D model simplifies learning. It makes learning easy, engaging, and very interactive.” This shift from passive learning to active engagement is critical especially for students who may not have consistent access to labs or modern textbooks. By leveraging digital tools, CTG ensures no learner is left behind.

A Bigger Vision for Educational Equity

For us, the pilot is more than a one-time event it is part of a broader vision for educational equity in Kenya and across Africa. “Remember, as part of our bigger picture at Close the Gap, we are here to bridge the digital divide,” said Francisca, Projects Manager at Close the Gap in Mombasa. “We are here with students from over five schools, together with teachers, to explore this wonderful technology designed to improve their learning.” The pilot not only introduced students to emerging educational technology it also fostered a culture of collaboration, cross-school engagement, and confidence-building. Students met peers from other institutions, shared their experiences, and began to imagine futures in science, technology, and innovation.

Why it matters

In regions where the digital divide continues to limit opportunities, platforms like 3DL are beacons of possibility. They show what is achievable when global partnerships, like the one between CTG and 3DL, invest in community-based impact. Every device, every training session, and every interactive lesson delivered at the hub brings us one step closer to a more just, inclusive digital future. The Mombasa hub is not simply a space, it is a springboard for dreams where a student’s first touch of a keyboard could spark a lifelong career in tech.

So yes, absolutely, we invite foreign donors, development partners, and education innovators to kindly take note: this is what scalable, community-centered impact looks like. And with your support, Close the Gap can continue to scale these interventions, ensuring that every child - regardless of background - has access to the tools they need to thrive in a digital world.
