On Thursday November 28th, the third Tech for Development workshop took place at the Google Digital Atelier in BeCentral.

On this interesting afternoon, more than 40 participants discovered the technology of mobile applications. This third workshop concluded the first series of Tech for Development workshops organised in context of the D4D programme, coordinated by Agoria and Close the Gap. The workshops itself were also organised together with NGO Federatie.

In this third workshop, NGOs and non-profits learned more about the latest opportunities and key players in mobile application development. Examples were shown that could better assist them in their work in the field, in Monitoring & Evaluation, fundraising, etc. The audience also received a concrete overview of the cost, scope, requirements, timing and key players to put such projects in place.

After a welcome coffee, Eva De Waele, Manager of the Google Digital Atelier, welcomed the participants. Then Koen Pellegrims, Co-founder and Managing Partner of FlowPilots gave an extensive workshop on Mobile Applications. Flow Pilots is a full-service agency specialized in mobile enterprise applications. He provided the audience with an overview of the different uses and opportunities of mobile applications. He also presented tips and best practices when thinking of working with mobile apps.

Afterwards, Arjan Keijser, Project Manager at the Belgian Red Cross-Flanders, presented their new app used to teach First Aid trainings in Africa. The app is used to train people in the basic staps of first aid, after which they have to pass a theoretical examination to progress to the in-person training.

A second concrete example was presented by Ingrid Nolet, Head of Communications of Shayp. This organisation uses artificial intelligence and patented IoT technology to instantly assess the costs and risks of leaks from a single measuring point in a building. They presented their application which helps individuals and organizations save water.
