Ebursary

Overall winner of the First Leap² Innovation Challenge. Theme: Education.

Finding bursaries and scholarships in Africa is a very tedious process. Ebursary was created to connect bright African students to scholarships and bursaries. They want to further improve their web platform, develop a mobile app and to reach as many bright needy students across Africa as possible.

Story behind the innovation

Growing up, the most frustrating thing about Denis Gachoki's primary and secondary school education was the number of times he'd get sent home for school fees, more frustrating is the duration he’d stay at home while his parents hustled to get some money to get him back to school. The only education support funds known to them was the CDF bursary and the most they would disburse was 2,000 Kenyan Shillings per term, which was quite insufficient to offset the balance.

Denis was very passionate about education; he knew that it was the only ticket he had to change his life and that of his community. So, anytime he’d be sent home, he felt like he was edging away from achieving his dreams of becoming an engineer. His biggest wish was that someone would discover about his ambitions and help in the paying of his school fees; it took long for that to happen until one day when he was informed by the school bursar that his school fees had been settled in full by an anonymous well-wisher. It was the happiest moment in his life; it allowed him to study with the peace of mind and later on excelled in his exams and got admitted to pursue Geospatial Engineering at the University of Nairobi.

Realizing how time-consuming the process of finding scholarships and bursaries is, he created a web-based Ebursary platform to help bright needy students to access information on Bursaries/Scholarships and apply for them online.

Also, the platform allows organizations to receive bursary applications online and provides them with tools necessary to filter through thousands of applications.  Also, we want to be able to reach as many bright needy students across Africa.

The solution

A web-based system that aggregates Secondary school, undergraduate and postgraduate bursaries and scholarships into one platform. It allows organizations to post bursaries /scholarships online and allows them to receive applications through the same platform; it also provides them with smart tools that enable them to filter through thousands of applications based on their awarding criteria.

Also, the platform allows students to view bursaries/scholarships relevant to them based on their profile, save those that interest them and receive email notifications whenever a new bursary/scholarship matching their profile is posted.

Benefits of the Platform to Students

It enables them to Search through a large database of bursaries and scholarships, receive a report matching bursaries and scholarships based on their particular criteria search. It enables them to receive timely alerts delivered to their email about bursaries and scholarships matching their profile. It enables them to apply for bursaries/scholarships online at their own convenience.

Benefits of the Platform to Organizations.

It allows organizations to receive applications online. It enables organizations to filter applicants based on their criteria. It enables organizations to achieve significant cost and time savings with respect to advertising, sourcing, profiling and processing of applicants. It increases efficiency and transparency in the Bursary/scholarship process.
